Eye drops can be used once a day, or once every few hours depending on the severity of the symptoms. The reason why they are not as effective is because they are temporary lubrication. The moment you blink, those tears are no longer there to bathe the front surface of the eyes. This causes some patients needing to use the eye drops constantly with no real relief from the symptoms.
Punctal Plugs can be inserted into your tear ducts to minimize the amount of tear drainage through your drainage system, therefore allowing the tears to stay on the surface. The reason why this is not effective in patients with Meibomian Gland Disease is that the quality of the tears they create, lacking oil to stick to the cornea, will still cause the tears to evaporate quickly. Even if the tear ducts are plugged, that doesn't stop your tears from evaporating when your eyes are open.
Vitamins like Omega-3's and Fish Oil help suppress inflammation and irritation that sometimes causes the irritating symptoms of dryness. These vitamins are recommended to be used as supplement in addition to other treatment methods because they will not directly relieve the symptoms of dryness.
Shoutout to @drchinnoptom @teephanyt and crew for saving my #eyeballs and glands!!! You guys are the best and thank you for your non-stop text to make sure I come in for an appt! Ladies and gents, if you're like me and uses eyeliner on your waterline, please stop, that's not what it's for, that's where your oil comes out to protect your eyes, when you line it, you block it. Guess what, the eye liner is trapped in your glands and ultimately blocking the oil from coming out (which will cause dry eyes, redness, google it) - when that gland is blocked, you loose it (it's like loosing a tooth). Luckily for me, it wasn't too late, he did a #LipiFlow to literally melt & pump out the eyeliner that's in there (gross right?!). You can use an eyeliner if you'd like, just go below the lash line, after this, I won't be using one. Anyway, I just thought I'd share it with you.
